Meet Iokasti...

Meet Iokasti...

Advance note: This is the script and excert from a recent short film I edited. For the sole reason of protecting annonymity of my toddler daughter, I decided against posting the film online, and instead to post the original, unedited, script.

Many ask me why I don’t post as many photos anymore. Or why I haven’t uploaded a video in months. “I thought you loved making videos. I used to enjoy seeing your photos from your walks and trips popping in my feed. It’s such a great hobby, don’t stop now. What happened to you? WHY???”

Meet Iokasti!

Well, Iokasti’s back at least. Iokasti is a happy and healthy 7-month-old and an only child so far. She takes pleasure from eating, making a mess, and laughing uncontrollably by watching herself in the mirror. She loves exploring the world, grabbing whatever she can reach in her immediate circumference and screaming at them off the top of her lungs in triumph. She’s passionate about everything new, which at her age, is everything…

In her spare time, she plays with her stuffed toys and enjoys the occasional power nap. Which is enough to keep her going non-stop for another 4-5 hours. And she’s a cuddler. Which means she doesn’t ask to be picked up. She DEMANDS it.

Iokasti’s day starts at 5:45am. That’s pretty convenient if you think that it also aligns with her dad’s wake-up routine. He then proceeds to make her breakfast, a big bottle of freshly prepared milk, and they both listen to the radio while enjoying the sounds of the early morning. Or is it still nighttime? There’s hardly any light outside…

No longer hungry, and full of energy after her hefty breakfast, they both proceed to play for a while, while her father scrambles to get ready for work. She doesn’t like being left alone during that time and always makes sure to let him know so.

Iokasti’s dad, for some weird reason, likes to spend time on his laptop in the mornings. But so does Iokasti. She knows that using the power of her voice, at some point he’ll invite her over to one of those “meetings” as he calls them. It’s just some people in small boxes talking over each other. So she gets bored fairly quickly. Thankfully, at that time her mom comes over and they get to play, learn, eat and do interesting stuff. Until in the evening when her dad comes over again and they all play together before bedtime.

But Iokasti’s favorite days are the weekends. When dad doesn’t spend time on his laptop and she gets to play with him all day long. She loves it so much that every time he tries to leave the room, she makes sure he’s aware by making a beautiful sound, almost like an exotic bird’s calling… He promptly returns and they keep on playing, going for long walks, and spending time together.

Epilogue

I never thought my life would change so drastically, to the point I wouldn’t have the time to pursue my hobbies and interests. I always thought that if you wanted something bad enough, you can make time for it. But there’s nothing more warming and rewarding, making me feel more complete than ever before than spending time with my daughter.

It’s time to move on. Hobbies will always be there, ready to be picked up at will. But if those first moments with Iokasti pass, they will forever be gone. But passions are passions and soon will reignite! And it’s not long now.

Till next time…
