A perfect day
What elements make up a great day? To me, it's a combination of going out in the city doing what I love along with good friends. A couple of weekends ago I was fortunate enough to do just that.
My hobbies don’t really align with those of my close friends. Neither their's with me. But that's the beauty of having a diverse set of friends. You don’t need to be the same to hand out. You have stronger, deeper, bonds that keep you together. But on the other hand, I tend to end up pursuing my passions and hobbies alone.
But last weekend was different. A good friend of mine, Dimitris, came London for work and decided to spend the weekend. He comes to London frequently and usually reaches out a day or two in advance. This time, however, was different. Dimitris texted me almost a month before.
”Are you going to be in London on the 9th of March?”
Since it was the end of January, I thought that it’s a bit early to organize a night out over a month in advance.
“Want to hang out and do a photo session? I'll buy beer.” I didn't need to think twice. This was a great opportunity for us to hang out during the day, for me to practise my photography skills and for him to get a couple of new headshots. A win-win situation.
We started our day with a cup of coffee in one of those hipster/trendy Soreditch coffee shops in East London. I had a couple of locations in mind for the portraits, but we ended up scouting for locations on the spot. We met a number of interesting characters and got in some awkward situations along the way. I've only just started becoming less self-conscious shooting videos and stills out in the public, but Dimitris was quite uncomfortable with people staring at us. It was very evident when posing for the camera. To be fair, I got him to pose at some awkward locations, but we got there in the end.
We spent over 4 hours together, catching up about life, making jokes and taking pictures. I learned a lot about portrait and fashion photography just by trying to take a different shot every time. But most importantly, I got some quality time with a really good friend of mine while exercising one of my passions, photography. The end of the day found us drinking our weights on beers at a local pub in Islington. The perfect end to a great day!
