The perfect nightcap @ 11am

The perfect nightcap @ 11am

In the beginning of the year, I had big plans to go out and shoot short films, docs and epic travel videos. But thanks to COVID-19, we’ve all been stranded indoors, with not much to do. So I had to look elsewhere to feed my creativity and exercise video making.

Since I had plenty of time during lockdown, my goal was to shoot at least one video per week. I had a few ideas on some narrative short films, but I also wanted to practise some epic broll sequences and transitions. And the easiest way to shoot broll is with products. So I made a list of some potentially interesting product video ideas that can be shot indoors using props I already had.

No, I’m not an alcoholic, but the first thing that crossed my mind was to film a video showing the process for making a cocktail. At the time I was not drinking alcohol for 40 days, so I parked the idea for a couple of weeks, and filmed a couple of other videos first. But now that my "‘prohibition” season is long gone, I decided to wake up early one morning and go for it.

I’ll be writing a post on what it takes to film a short product video like this one with some behind the scenes footage, so I’m not going to share any details just yet. However, it did take a lot longer to film it than I initially expected, mainly because I had to simultaneously film and mix the drink.

This resulted in multiple cuts for each scene and me getting light-headed from all the ‘filming sips’ at 11am. Even my wife noticed it and asked if I secretly add alcohol to my coffee. I laughed. She didn’t…

Till next time…
