Day 4: Exploring soft light

Day 4: Exploring soft light

With self-portrait and stop-motion photography out the way, I opted in for yet another challenge.

The challenge was clear. “Use clouds as your natural softbox to capture more of your subject’s tones.” Challenge accepted!

Before I move forward, I have to confess. I cheated… I had a look at next day’s challenge asking to explore hard light. I knew that the next day was going to be sunny, a rare occasion in London, and I wanted to capture something that would compliment today’s challenge.

Living in London means that you have access to great architecture, trademark black cabs and, also a trademark, rainy weather. So, I opted in for a combination of all three.

The gloomy weather and the busy streets of central London helped me build my composition naturally. I was able to capture the sentiment of London’s central vibe under rainy weather even though my camera got soaking wet.

Due to bad weather, I learned how to take spontaneous pictures the hard way. Trying to juggle a bulky camera, heavy lenses and a bag full of gear while making sure I’m in focus and snap a meaningful composition, proved challenging.
