Five things I learned during my paternity leave

In July 2021, my wife gave birth to our beautiful daughter. Nine months later, I took almost three months off work to temporarily become a stay-at-home-dad and help raise our daughter for a little while. With me back to work full time now, I wanted to share some of my learnings and key moments so if you ever end up in the same situation, you know what to expect. Spoiler alert, I’d do it again!

The art of not so fine dinning

Is baby food making art or science? I’m only joking. Everyone knows it’s art. In this short blog post, I’m taking you down the process of making a short video about baby food preparation. And if you don’t know my style already, it’s somewhat of a parody one.

Meet Iokasti...

It’s been too long since I last posted here. The truth is that I hardly had time to get on top of life admin, and raising a child at the same time meant that some of my hobbies and interests had to take a back seat. This is the story of why and how things have changed and a short introduction to the world of Iokasti, my daughter.

3 things I learned during early parenthood that helped me with my work and art

It’s been two months since my life changed once and for all. Everyone warns you as soon as they find out that you’re about to become a new father. But nothing is capable of preparing you for what’s next. At the age of 37, when you think you know almost everything, you soon realize that what you knew so far doesn’t apply anymore, and you need to adjust and keep an open mind on how you go about your life. Let me explain…

This is my final post...

It’s the end of an era. After more than 10 years of using this blog as the medium to share my personal thoughts, challenges, passions, and important life events, this is my final post. In a few days, a new era begins for me and my family and I couldn’t be more excited about the new adventures and challenges that life has in stock for me.

The last getaway

It was August 2020 when I last packed my suitcase, carefully loaded camera and lenses in my backpack, and hit the road for a new adventure, hungry to shoot new content. A year when by and my camera bag ended up collecting dust in my closet. That’s a very long time…

If they were able to talk, how would beer glasses describe 2020?

What if beer glasses could speak? What would their stories be like? How did they experience 2020 and how did the last 12 months feel like? I recently made a short film about the impact COVID had in our lives, from a perspective of a beer glass. I know what you’re thinking. How has this lockdown impacted anything else but our mental, physical and financial well-being. Well, that’s what I’m trying to unravel with this post. Read on to learn more.

Do babies come with instructions?

Will Smith once said; “The new TV I had recently bought came with a 100-page manual. I now had a baby in my arms and not a single page of instructions.”. When I first heard this I laughed thinking it can’t be that hard caring for a baby. Of course, we’re not born knowing how to raise a child, but we’ll figure it out when the time comes. And then, 13 weeks before my firstborn is due, it hit me. I’m nowhere near competent enough to raise a child. So I took on reading.

This is personal...

Can you remember the exact moment you realised your life was never going to be the same again? The time that you knew your future was right there in front of you and all you had to do was make sure you don’t mess it up? People often ask me whether I can place the exact moment I knew SHE was the one. Well, I can. And here’s that story.

A year is too long

The most recent lockdown in the UK has affected many of us in ways we didn’t think it would in the first place. During that process I saw my creativity draining, leaving me unwilling to pick up my camera. I wanted to battle this and push through. And what better way to do this than to persevere and make a video about it.

I'm not a Millennial...

I’m not a big fan of tags. Especially when I don’t associate with one. We live in a world where we tend to judge people based on a number of characteristics, some negative, some less so. But most recently, we tend to judge people based on the generation they were born in, with millennials and baby boomers taking all the heat. But while it’s not right to judge people based on their nationality, social background and race, it’s not eight either to judge them based on when they were born.

The reason I don't do New Year resolutions

Happy New Year! Another year, another New Year resolution list. At least for some people, not for me. I don’t do New Year resolutions for one reason. I fail to achieve any of the goals I set at the beginning of the year. But there’s a really good reason as to why those plans fail to begin with. Just hear me out.

Xmas in London during a pandemic

2020 was a strange year. COVID hit everyone hard and has reshaped the world as we knew it until recently. In an effort to capture this key moment in our most recent history, I grabbed my camera and hit the streets of London, during what it once was the busiest time of the year, and I was left with mixed feelings.

I finally made it

Making money while you sleep is a dream for any human being. Especially when the money you make comes from your hobby rather than your day job. After two years of hard work shedding sweat, blood and tears to make content that can be successfully sold online, while I’m literally in bed sleeping, I finally made it (ish)!

Insanity during the pandemic

2020 is the year of COVID-19 and mental health & wellbeing. The pandemic has had devastating implications to the world as we knew it until 12 months ago. On top of that, it has had implications to our mental health not being able to distinguish between work and personal life, leading us to insanity…

Photography from the past

I never thought of saying this, but when older generations say “In my time things were much simpler and the process was more enjoyable” they’re right. We live in a world where technology, in the name of automation and simplicity, has taken over every aspect of our lives. From smart devices, to smart homes, to self-driving cars, and private spacecraft, technology has invaded our lives. In the name of technological advancement, we lost one very important element. The thirst for learning a new craft and the sense of accomplishment when you finally get something right. That feeling is what I get when I film analogue.

I made a beer commercial at home

I know what you’re thinking. Not another video where Nikos is drinking again. Well, I don’t drink in this video. At least not on camera. But let’s face it, alcohol makes for an interesting subject in any situation. Jokes aside, filming this commercial-style video was a great way for me to keep sane during this pandemic since I’m not exactly "allowed” to go out and shoot yet. But in all honesty, I won’t judge you if you wanted to have a pint after watching the video.

Practice makes perfect

Make, learn, repeat. As Matti Haapoja once said, these three words are the only “gear” you need to become better at anything you set your eyes on. Not just photography and video, but everything you do in life. I embarked on a creative journey just over a couple of years ago and started practising photography and videography. Most of the things I shoot are not great, but every time I look at something from my work I dislike, I’m determined to make it better next time. The only thing that can’t change for the better is the way I look… At least naturally…

a new journey begins

There’s light at the end of the tunnel. Amidst a global pandemic, I was lucky enough to land the ideal next step in my career. A new chapter begins and I couldn’t be more ecstatic about it! However, even though it had a happy ending, it wasn’t the fairytale you’d expect.
